Other than its fondness for football, the city of Les Verts can also be considered as one of the French capitals of cycling hosting the Tour de France 25 times, Paris-Nice on 59 occasions and 24 times has it been on the map of the Critérium du Dauphiné. In 2017, Thomas De Gendt had indeed used his favourite recipe to victoriously conclude his day in the breakaway and capture the overall leader’s jersey of the Dauphiné.
The peloton of the Tour gathered in Brioude in 2008 for the start of a stage that would be won several hours later by Luis León Sánchez in Aurillac. In 2013, a stage of Paris-Nice had been claimed in town by Andrew Talansky, while young city native Romain Bardet distinguished himself by taking 6th spot on the day. A few months later, the AG2R rider took part in his first Tour de France, finishing the event as the best French rider in 15th position.
