On the occasion of the fourteen stages judged in Mulhouse, three Tour de France winners have triumphed there: Nicolas Frantz for the first visit in 1925, Bernard Hinault on a time-trial in 1981 and Laurent Fignon in 1992. The last finish in the city in 2014 had allowed Tony Martin to show all his talent when he conquered the win after a 60-kilometre solo effort, dropping his final rival on the climb of the Markstein.
The ski resort entered the Tour history book in style as a stage finish in 2012 with its final climb made for the best possible climbers. On that day, Chris Froome managed a fabulous demonstration of power perfectly responding to a Cadel Evans attack when the climb was at its steepest. At the top, team SKY claimed a perfect double: stage for Froome, yellow jersey for Wiggins. Two years later, it was Vincenzo Nibali’s turn to triumph with his Italian national champion’s jersey, a performance imitated by Fabio Aru in 2017.
