SIGHTS

Sønderborg Castle

Sønderborg Castle holds almost 800 years of Southern Jutland and Schleswig’s dramatic history. The many rooms show modern exhibitions about the turbulent history of Southern Jutland and the border country, the Danish King Christian II's imprisonment at the castle, the Danish defeat in 1864 and the many Danes participating in World War I on the German side prior to the Reunification in 1920.

Universe Science Park

Universe Park is an adventure park on the island of Als in Jutland, opposite Sønderborg, with the theme of science. The aim at Universe is to share the passion for science, technology and innovation with children and young people. The park is filled with a wealth of fabulous experiences and attractions: Lift a car, build your own water rocket or roam around a virtual world. Opened in 2005, its motto are: "The theme park where fun is science".

Graasten Palace

Gråsten Palace is best known as the summer resident of the royal family.

The very first palace in Gråsten was a hunting and leisure palace built in the midst of the 16th century. After it burned down in 1603, a new palace was built, probably where the current palace´s south wing is now.

Shortly before year 1700 the Chancellor Frederik Ahlefeldt built an impressive Baroque palace, which itself unfortunately burned down in 1757, only leaving the palace church. The current Gråsten Palace, or rather the south wing, thus originates from 1759. In 1842 the main building was added.

In 1935 the right of use of the palace was given to the late King Frederik and Queen Ingrid. Queen Ingrid was very interested in flowers and stood for the planning of the garden at Gråsten Palace until her death in 2000.

Around Graasten Palace lies Graasten Palace Garden, which is open to the public when the royal family is not in residence at the palace.

The Royal Kitchen Garden at Graasten Palace opened for the public in 2020. In the kitchen garden you can follow the course of the year in a working garden that produces fruit and vegetables for the royal dining table.
