Sønderborg is located in the southernmost part of Denmark, just a few kilometres from the German border. The municipality’s territory is unique in that it extends over the island of Als and the Jutland peninsula. The town’s importance as a port has shaped its development, as has its subsequent development as a university town. The colourful houses and murals that brighten up the streets also attract tourists. Denmark’s former world champion, Mads Pedersen, triumphed here on the second stage of the last Tour of Denmark.
