VILLENEUVE-SUR-LOT

As is often the case in this region, this town beats to the rhythm of rugby, and more specifically rugby league, as the “Léopards d’Aquitaine” have won both the French championship and French Cup on nine occasions. As far as cycling goes, during the 2000 edition of the Route du Sud, now the Route d’Occitanie, the young David Millar gave notice of his potential when he won a time trial in Villeneuve, although his success was largely unheralded. Two weeks later, though, he became the first Yellow Jersey of the new millennium at the Futuroscope theme park near Poitiers! In that same 2000 Tour, the peloton also paused in Villeneuve-sur-Lot, where Erik Dekker claimed the first of his four stage victories in the race.
