The green jersey was first created in 1953 for the 50th anniversary of the event. It added a new challenge to the race, another jersey to attempt to win.

The first green jersey in history was worn by the Swiss Fritz Schaer. It is worn by the leader of the classification in points. The points are won during the intermediate sprint and at stage arrivals.
