The road to Le Creusot is long and gruelling, and features the ascent of the Signal d’Uchon as well as other less obvious traps. The 2021 crossing of the rugged Morvan triggered an all-out battle on every front: there was a star-studded breakaway led by Matej Mohorič, Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel, who was in the Yellow Jersey; the UAE team couldn’t control the action despite its best efforts; and Primož Roglič suffered a major reverse. While aggressive riders can start devising plans, circumstances will almost certainly disrupt them.
