In 1969, Eddy Merckx created quite a sensation on his debut in the Tour de France. In his first participation, he won with ease, authority and panache, then returned to Belgium with the Yellow Jersey to the Grand-Place in Brussels, thirty years after the last Belgian rider won the Tour’s biggest prize. Fifty years later, on the occasion of the Grand Départ of the 2019 Tour, the entire nation continued to pay tribute to the five-time winner of the event, whose multiple cycling records still seem unreachable.
