Since the fist victory of the Belgian “locomotive” Jef Demuysère in 1931, breakaway specialists have often triumphed in Gap, like Jean-François Bernard who claimed his first Tour stage in 1986 or Pierrick Fédrigo twenty years later. Then, the finishes in Gap crowned a World Champion, Norwegian Thor Hushovd in 2011 and two years later a rider who was to also carry the rainbow jersey, Portuguese Rui Costa. In 2019, for the first time, the wearer of the European Champion’s jersey, Italian Matteo Trentin victoriously crossed the finish line of a Tour stage.
