Fausto Coppi won a legendary stage in Pinerolo that proved decisive in his victory over Gino Bartali in the 1949 Giro, their duel masterfully described by the writer Dino Buzzati in the columns of Il Corriere della Sera: “The triumph of a young man and the irremediable twilight of another who was no longer very young.” The town, which was governed by the kingdom of France on several occasions, was also the last to host an Italian stage of the Tour de France back in 2011. Edvald Boasson Hagen won from a breakaway group to claim his second victory in that edition.
