The climbers often face a serious test on stages in the Cantal. On this occasion, things will start to get tough when they ascend the Col de la Griffoul, which is new to the Tour, followed by the Pas de Peyrol, which will be tackled from Murat. Another hard test lies in store when they reach the Col de Pertus, where the road’s steep enough for a climber to shake off the last of his rivals. The ski station of Le Lioran could also be the setting for a tight battle between the big guns.
