SEMUR-EN-AUXOIS

This Burgundy town overlooking the Armançon was fortified in the Middle Ages with ramparts that made it a stronghold and remain one of its characteristic features. Every spring, Semur is also the venue for the “Course de la Bague” (the Ring Race), created in 1639, where the fastest rider is always rewarded with a gold ring bearing the town’s coat of arms. As far as cycling goes, Semur hosted a Tour stage start in 2007 and the French championships were held here in 2008, although history doesn’t record whether Nicolas Vogondy received a precious ring in addition to the tricolour jersey awarded for his second national title.
