Located in the heart of the Sologne region, Chambord is the most majestic and emblematic of the Loire Valley châteaux. King François I commissioned its construction in 1519, and Leonardo da Vinci is credited with part of its architectural design. A 2005 Tour stage began from the château’s forecourt. Raced at breakneck speed to Montargis, it ended with victory for defending points classification champion Robbie McEwen, ahead of green jersey wearer Tom Boonen and Thor Hushovd, who would go on to win the famous jersey in that edition.
