Tour legends have flourished in Angers. The City of the Dukes of Anjou fell for the “pedaller of charm” Hugo Koblet, cheered on Jacques Anquetil, launched Eddy Merckx toward his fourth overall victory, and saw Tom Boonen claim his first-ever stage win in 2004. It also played a part in the legend of the “eternal runner-up”. In 1967, the Tour began with a significant innovation, the first-ever prologue time trial. Raymond Poulidor was the favourite to take the yellow jersey... but he finished second behind Spanish specialist José Maria Errandonea.
