Home to The Reds and their footballing rivals The Toffees, as well as The Beatles, Liverpool also has an affinity for speed-loving cyclists. When it was first opened, the Museum of Liverpool proudly displayed the futuristic bikes on which local racer Chris Boardman claimed the Yellow Jersey, several world titles and an Olympic gold medal in the 1990s. More recently, a sprinter added further sporting lustre to the port city’s reputation – Germany’s Marcel Kittel, who won the opening stage of the 2014 Tour of Britain in Liverpool just a few weeks after demonstrating his power at the Tour’s Grand Départ in Yorkshire.
