In the wake of its neighbours Bayonne and Cambo-les-Bains, Hasparren is joining the list of Basque towns that have hosted a Tour stage, having just been a passing feature on the race beforehand. It will be an opportunity to pay tribute to Romain Sicard. Winner of the Tour de l’Avenir and the world under-23 championship in 2009, Bayonne-born Sicard grew up in Hasparren and competed in seven Tours as a rider before taking up a role as a sports director.
