Major Pyrenean mountain passes have often been tackled after the race has passed through Saint-Lary-Soulan, the stages then finishing on the heights above the resort town. In 1974, Raymond Poulidor achieved a remarkable feat by claiming his final Tour victory at Pla d’Adet at the age of 38. Fifty years on, Tadej Pogačar emulated him on those same slopes. The Slovenian rider is at home in the Pyrenees, and especially in Saint-Lary-Soulan, where he also won in 2021, although that victory came at the Col du Portet. On both occasions, Pogačar was wearing the Yellow Jersey and Jonas Vingegaard finished second.
