Alfredo Binda is doubly linked to Pau’s early involvement in the Tour: the elegant Italian champion was the first stage winner there on 9 July 1930 and also triumphed the following day when the race left Pau for Luchon. Those were his only two stage victories at the Tour. Even more impressively, Tadej Pogačar has won four stages that started in Pau: at Laruns in 2020, which was his first Tour victory; at Luz-Ardiden in 2021, when Jonas Vingegaard took over from Primož Roglič as the principal rival to the all-conquering Slovenian; on the heights of Pla d’Adet above Saint-Lary-Soulan in 2024; and at Gavarnie-Gèdre, following his longest solo ride of the race last summer.
