While Romain Bardet’s victory in 2016 remains the last major cycling event to have taken place in Saint-Gervais, the more dedicated of fans will also remember that the town hosted the start of the penultimate stage of the Tour de l’Avenir two years earlier. A young Colombian rider called Miguel Ángel López had dominated the race that week and was already wearing the leader’s jersey when he won in La Rosière. In the final overall classification, he finished ahead of rivals who have also lived up to the promise they showed then, including Pierre Latour, Emanuel Buchmann and Tao Geoghegan Hart.
