Classics specialist Jo de Roo gave himself a wonderful 29th birthday present by winning his third and final Tour stage in Aubenas. That day, he finished ahead of Lucien Aimar, who was closing in on the Yellow Jersey that he would eventually win at the end of the 1966 edition of the race. Two years later, Aimar pulled on the blue, white and red jersey of French champion after winning the national road title in Aubenas. The Ardèche town later saw Mark Cavendish win stage 19 of the 2009 Tour, his fifth victory in that year’s race, which came two days before his sixth, his first success on the Champs-Élysées.
