ÉVAUX-LES-BAINS

The department of Creuse had to wait longer than any other in mainland France before hosting its first stage of the Tour, Guéret receiving that honour in 2004. It’s had to wait another twenty years before welcoming it back with a stage starting in Évaux-les-Bains. The spa town isn’t far from Montluçon, which has long had strong links with the Tour. Soon after the sub-prefecture in the department of Allier hosted its first stage in 1953, the town’s most famous son, Roger Walkowiak, won the 1956 race.
