Located in the Arve Valley, Cluses has hosted two Tour de France finishes and three starts. On each occasion that the peloton has set out from there, it’s faced a different scenario: a time trial, a hilly stage that resulted in a first Tour success for Thor Hushovd, a sprinter who was always especially keen to get into a breakaway, and, most recently, a big mountain stage in 2021, when Ben O’Connor put on a solo masterclass on the road to Tignes. Tadej Pogačar also reclaimed the yellow jersey that he’d snatched at the very end of the 2020 edition after asserting his dominance by distancing rivals Richard Carapaz and Jonas Vingegaard.
