“I was in a bad state at the start but I got better as the stage progressed. I’ve got to say a big thanks to my men in my team who kept on motivating and helping me. They were really there for me today and it was very important to have then on my side.
“For Luis to then go and win the stage has made it a day to remember. We had a very difficult few days in this team but today is a very beautiful one at the end.
“It was a little bit difficult for me to get through the day and the few stages before this but we’re working on the problems and like I said we’re getting better.
“When I saw the crashes I was just relieved not to be caught up. I came around the corner and there was total mayhem. I saw guys lying everywhere, some on the road some off to the side, and it already look pretty bad. There were guys coming crawling out of the bushes and it was a really nasty crash. It was bad for them and bad for the Tour that they had to stop… I was a victim of a crash a few days ago and unfortunately it’s part of cycling.”
