Tim Merlier: "To win for my family is really special"

"Having my son here gave me extra motivation. He’s still young but I think he will remember that one and we’ll show it to him later. To win for my family is really special. It’s not easy to get it just on the day that they are here.

I had some radio issues and there was an attack with 27 riders or so and I was not aware. I suffered on the last climb but I resisted and then Jasper Stuyven had a bit of a flat tyre. He was not sure he could do the lead out but I told him to stay calm. The communication today was much better between us. He also knew I was having a good day.

Yesterday was a different one. Today, I was really focused on the guys who moved and boxed me in. I tried to stay in front of them and I found just a little bit of space. From the meeting, I knew the finish would suit me."
