One day One Story #4 - the cobblestones of the North

The 2020 Tour was originally scheduled to take place from 27 June to 19 July. To keep the flame of the race burning, letour.fr will relive every day a glorious or curious race event that happened two, fifteen or forty years ago. A trip down memory lane…

From time to time, the cobblestones of Paris–Roubaix burst onto the scene in the Tour de France. In 2018, the stage from Arras to Roubaix features 15 sectors for a total of 22 km of cobblestones… enough to keep the Tour favourites on the edge of their saddles. Richie Porte crashes out of the race before the peloton reaches the sectors, but the cobbles also extract their pound of flesh from Jakob Fuglsang, Romain Bardet, Rigoberto Urán and even Chris Froome. John Degenkolb, the winner of the Queen of Classics three years earlier, takes the spoils at the finish.
