The race is approaching Colombey-les-Deux-Églises (km 135) famous as the home village of General De Gaulle. A gigantic Lorraine Cross and a Memorial museum pay homage to the former French president, who stood on the side of the road in 1960 to watch the Tour de France. The race stopped, the general shook the hands of race director Jacques Goddet and yellow jersey holder Gastone Nencini. The story goes that Pierre Beuffeuil, who had been dropped, took the opportunity of the halt to return to the peloton and break on his own to win the stage in Troyes.
