Mondorf-les-Bains and cycling

This is the home of the Schleck family. 2010 Tour de France champion Andy and his brother Frank both grew up here and still live in Mondorf-les-Bains. They altogether won five stages of the Tour. With their father Johnny, who raced between 1965 and 1974, they have taken part in a total of 22 Tours. Andy, who retired with lingering knee problems, now owns a cycling shop in nearby Itzig. Frank put an end to his career at the end of last season.

Mondorf never hosted the tour but the race paid frequent visits to the Grand Duchy since the race resumed after WWII in 1947. Apart from the 2010 winner, three other Luxembourg riders claimed the world's biggest race – François Faber (1909), Nicolas Frantz (1927 and 1928) and Charly Gaul (1958). Luxembourg riders won 70 Tour de France stages, placing the small country ahead of Britain (66), Switzerland (60) and far ahead of Australia (28) or the United States (18).

Between 1921 an 1939, Mondorf-les-Bains was home to a Brussels-Luxembourg-Mondorf, race won among others by Sylvere Maes (1932) who would go on to win the Tour in 1936.
