After the withdrawal of Alejandro Valverde and Ion Izagirre, only 11 Spanish riders have taken the start of the first classic stage of the Tour de France. The last time the number was lower was in 1983 with ten Spanish starters. Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) is the most famous of the Spanish contingent that also includes national champion Jesus Herrada, Jonathan Castroviejo and Imanol Erviti (Movistar), Mikel Landa and Mikel Nieve (Sky), Javier Moreno (Bahrain-Merida), Luis Angel Maté and Dani Navarro (Cofidis), Haimar Zubeldia and Markel Irizar (Trek-Segafredo).
