Moirans-en-Montagne belongs to the Jura Sud territory, comprising 17 communes located on the left bank of the Lake of Vouglans in the heart of the Haut-Jura nature park and the Lake District. The capital of toy in the heart of the Land of the Child, Moirans-en-Montagne has led an ambitious campaign for more than 20 years in the fields of culture, education and environment. The effort is based upon the local tradition of woodcraft and toy making.
Woodcraft appeared in the area as early as the 13th century. The Jura forest and especially the local woods provided the necessary resources for the activity. With time, the local craftsmen started specialising in the making of chessboards or buttons, which led to the development of the toy industry.
Thanks to this heritage, Jura Sud dubbed itself the Land of the Child. More than just a motto, this dedication to the world of children is a reality. Every year in mid-July, the Ideklic festival turns the town into a City of the Child with its workshops, shows and musical creations. In mid-December, the Christmas in Toyland festival emphasises the town's vocation.
