Italian history at the Tour de France

Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport put the Tour de France at the top of its front page following Matteo Trentin's victory in Nancy. They noted that no Italian was in the yellow jersey on the same day another Italian won a stage since the 2000 Tour de France in Dax with Paolo Bettini as a stage winner while Alberto Elli led the race. The last time that two Italians won a stage in the first seven days before Vincenzo Nibali and Trentin was in 1997 with Mario Cipollini and Nicola Minali. Trentin was the 107th Italian to win a stage at the Tour de France for a total of 253 victories, the two biggest scorers being Gino Bartali and Cipollini with 12.
