Thierry Marie's longest day

On July 11, 1991, Thierry Marie was really longing for his native Normandy. Gone after 25 kms in this long stage from Arras, the prologue winner remained on his own for 234 kms before winning in Le Havre and claim the yellow jersey back from Greg LeMond. The Frenchman had ridden the second longest winning solo in the history of the Tour after the 253-km break by Albert Bourlon between Carcassonne and Luchon in 1947. The stage actually started without a yellow jersey holder after LeMond refused to wear the garment in homage to former overall leader Rolf Sorensen, who had crashed out in the previous stage. A race between Paris and Arras took place between 1923 and 1959 and was revived in 2010 under the name of Paris Arras Tour.
