The administrative capital of the Basque Country is home to a successful basketball team, Saski Baskonia, winner of the European Cup in 1996 and four times the Spanish champion, 2020 being the last occasion. On the cycling side, it’s the birthplace of Joseba Beloki (second in the 2002 Tour de France), but older Basques will remember that in 1977 one of their own won a stage in the Tour de France. José Nazabal spent 115km out on his own that day, honouring the jersey of the Kas team, the Spanish lemonade company that was also established in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
