The Tour’s biggest mountain stage, featuring a cumulative vertical gain of 5,600 metres, is taking place on the race’s penultimate day for the first time. The names of the climbs alone is enough to get heads spinning: after ascending the Col de la Croix de Fer, the riders will tackle the Télégraphe and the Tour’s high point, the Galibier. Following that, they’ll climb to the ski station on the road via the Col de Sarenne, which has only ever been used in 2013 and then as a descent. History can be made in uncharted terrain.
