Cycle city label of the Tour de France: road to 200 certified cities in 2026

  • As part of its program to promote sustainable mobility, Riding into the future, the Tour de France launched the Cycle city of the Tour de France label in 2021. It encourages initiatives by municipalities that have already hosted the Tour de France to promote cycling in all its forms.
  • For this sixth edition, 27 cities have applied, including five located outside of France.
  • The results will be announced on Thursday, May 21, as part of May by Bike.
  • New for 2026: the label will be extended to regions, departments, and public establishments for inter-municipal cooperation (EPCI).

2026: SIXTH EDITION OF THE CYCLE CITY LABEL OF THE TOUR DE FRANCE, EN ROUTE TO OVER 200 CITIES EXPECTED TO BE AWARDED THE LABEL?

Created in 2021, this initiative allows cities that host or have already hosted the Grande Boucle, in its men's, women's or Tour de France-labeled event (criterium or cyclosportive stage) versions, to have their commitment to the development of cycling in all its forms evaluated and rewarded. Whether French or foreign, rural or urban, municipalities applying for the label must highlight in their application all existing measures to encourage cycling and present their short- and medium-term development plans at the local level (deployment of infrastructure, improvement of cyclist safety, learning to ride a bike, parking and theft prevention, maintenance and repair, etc.). All these measures contribute to the growth of cycling as a means of everyday transport, a source of leisure, and a sporting activity.

Since 2021190 cities in 11 countries have already received at least one level of certification. In total, nearly 13 million inhabitants benefit from the policies implemented by certified local authorities, and this sixth edition should enable the label to pass the symbolic milestone of 200 “Tour de France Cycle Cities.”

CITIES APPLYING FOR THE LABEL IN 2026

With 27 applications, the 2026 promotion could see many municipalities recognized for their efforts to promote cycling.

On the French side, nine cities on the 2026 Tour route and four others on the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift route have submitted applications, including five cities that already hold the label and wish to have their scores reassessed to take into account their most recent initiatives. Among the municipalities along the route of the upcoming edition, some rub shoulders with others that have already hosted the Grande Boucle, ranging in size from Bédoin to Lyon and Gavarnie-Gèdre to Nice. They reflect the diversity of applications, once again this year, for a label that allows them to showcase their assets on their own scale.

The 2026 edition is further enhanced by the application from Montgeron, a municipality in the Essonne department, which occupies a special place in the history of the Tour de France as it was the very first starting point for the first edition of the Tour in 1903. This historic role gives Montgeron a unique symbolic dimension, recalling the origins of the Grande Boucle.

Bédoin and Malaucène, well known in the cycling world due to their proximity to Mont Ventoux, are also candidates. These communities are marked by the daily passage of thousands of cyclists who come to test themselves on this legendary climb.

Across the borderLausanne, the Olympic capital and starting point for this year's Tour de France Femmes avec ZwiftArlon, a Belgian stage town for the 1968 Tour de France, and Prachatice, a town in the Czech Republic that hosted L'Étape Czech Republic by Tour de France in 2024 and 2025, are also applying for the label.

The jury is now reviewing all the applications. The results will be announced to the candidate cities on May 21 as part of the “May by Bike” campaign.

THE CYCLE CITY OF THE TOUR DE FRANCE LABEL IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR REGIONS, DEPARTMENTS, AND PUBLIC COOPERATIVE INSTITUTIONS

This is THE big news for 2026. Building on its success with cities over the past six years, the Cycle City of the Tour de France label is now open to regions, departments, and public establishments for inter-municipal cooperation (EPCI). This is a natural development that recognizes the commitment of local authorities on a larger scale, where major policies on land use planning, mobility, and ecological transition are structured.

Based on the same model as for municipalities, these local authorities will be awarded 1 to 4 bikes, depending on the quality, consistency, and ambition of their cycling policy, whether in terms of infrastructure planning, territorial coverage, or support for cycling. Application forms will be available on our website from March 3rd, 2026.

By extending the label to these new territorial levels, the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift are reaffirming their commitment to encouraging a collective and coordinated approach to cycling. Because it is at all levels of the territory that the future of cycling is being built in a sustainable way.
