One day One Story #5 - 2014: Yorkshire turns out in force

The 2020 Tour was originally scheduled to take place from 27 June to 19 July. To keep the flame of the race burning, letour.fr will relive every day a glorious or curious race event that happened two, fifteen or forty years ago. A trip down memory lane…

The Tour heads back to England after its 1994 visit and the London Grand Départ in 2007. It is Yorkshire's turn to host the peloton this time round. Team Sky has propelled two British riders, Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome, to victory in the previous two editions. The cycling fever sparked by these triumphs fills the roadsides with fans in the opening stage from Leeds to Harrogate, and the peloton finds itself in the midst of a massive, ecstatic, colourful crowd. Everything seems in place for local hero Mark Cavendish to take the stage, but he crashes and breaks his collarbone shortly before the finish, leaving to Marcel Kittel the honour of receiving the yellow jersey from the Duchess of Cambridge.
