Laragne-Montéglin

Population : 3,500

Laragne-Monteglin is one of the southernmost communes of Hautes-Alpes, located halfway between Marseille and Grenoble. The result of the fusion of villages Laragne and Monteglin, it is a pleasant little town with a distinct Provencal flavour and part of the future Regional Park of Provencal Baronies.
The town really developed in the 17th century when Gaspard de Perrinet, lord of Arzeliers, built a beautiful castle in 1609. It still stands in the very heart of the city, but is unfortunately damaged and hidden by modern constructions. The hamlet of the commune, Arzeliers, has been occupied since the 12th century and was a property of the Mevouillon family. A previous fortified castle was destroyed during the Wars of Religion.
