TROYES

The prefecture of the department of Aube is not just the home of andouillette (pig intestine sausage) and ready-to-wear clothing, it’s also been named France’s most sporting city on two occasions. Of the Tour’s first nine visits to Troyes, the most unusual was perhaps Pierre Beuffeuil’s success in 1960. According to some accounts, he punctured early in the stage and was dropped, but he was able to make up the ground he lost during the break in racing orchestrated by race director Jacques Goddet in order to greet General de Gaulle. Beuffeuil went on to claim victory 70km later. In 2017, Marcel Kittel’s bunch sprint victory was achieved in much more conventional style, as the majority of stages that have finished in Troyes have gone to the sprinters. Troyes was also the home of one of the great brotherhoods of French cycling, the Simon family, of whom the best known is Pascal, who took the yellow jersey in 1983 Tour but then suffered the misfortune of being forced to abandon the race due to a broken collarbone. Three of the brothers, Pascal, Régis and Jérôme, won a Tour stage. The fourth, François, wore the Yellow Jersey during the 2001 edition and also has a Giro stage win on his palmarès.
