In 2009, the principality hosted the Tour for the seventh time, Fabian Cancellara winning the Grand Départ’s opening time trial. But we shouldn’t forget either the memorable events that occurred when the Tour visited in 1964 and one notable episode in the Jacques Anquetil- Raymond Poulidor duel was played out. On the asphalt track of the old Louis II Stadium, “Poupou” went elbow to elbow with Anquetil to contest the sprint. As soon as he crossed the line, he sat up, not realising there was still a full lap to go. He finished fifth on the stage, victory going to his rival and with it a time bonus of one minute. After yet more twists and turns, Anquetil won his fifth Tour in Paris. His margin over his great rival. Just 55 seconds.
