CESENATICO

The home town of Marco Pantani has a museum dedicated to his memory. But this small seaside resort in Emilia Romagna had strong links with cycling long before “the Pirate” won the Giro and Tour in 1998. It has featured regularly on the Giro route since 1935, when Learco Guerra was the first name on its roll of honour, Rudi Altig among those added later thanks to his success in 1966. Cesenatico’s beaches were also the starting point for time trials duels between Felice Gimondi and Eddy Merckx that finished in San Marino, the Italian winning in 1968, while “the Cannibal” took his revenge the following year.
