The last time the Tour visited the Hautes-Alpes resort was back in 1989 on the occasion of a time-trial won by Steven Rooks. But what many cycling enthusiasts keep in mind is of course the first finish in Orcières in 1971 and the way Luis Ocaña conquered the overall lead. Master of a worthy breakaway group, the Spaniard eventually took off for a final 60-km solo effort, enjoying an advantage of close to nine minutes on his main rivals and especially Eddy Merckx. That lead seemed decisive but the duel between the two big favourites of that edition sadly ended with the crash that forced Ocaña to abandon in the Pyrenees.
