Tarragona’s Roman ruins, and particularly its 2nd-century amphitheatre overlooking the Mediterranean, have earned it UNESCO World Heritage Status. Long before the 2026 Tour, the city had ties with France thanks to the Carthusian monks who found refuge there after being expelled from their distillery in Voiron. As a result, their famous Chartreuse liqueur, which is made using 130 plants, was also produced in Tarragona, which is now twinned with the commune in the department of Isère. This partnership was signed last summer during the Vuelta, which featured Tarragona 18 times as a stage town between 1936 and 2023 before it ventured to Voiron.
