Nice

Nice Côte d'Azur: a sporting region
Between the sea and the mountains, the Nice region is a magnificent natural theatre in the heart of the biggest conurbation in France: Nice Côte d'Azur has 49 towns and 550,000 inhabitants.  From the Baie des Anges to the highest summits of the Mercantour, and from the Promenade des Anglais to the legendary Col de la Bonette, which peaks at 2,715 metres on the highest road in Europe, this extraordinary sports site – heaven on earth for fans of any form of physical activity – is now open to enthusiasts all year round and in every season...Skiing, yachting, running, mountain biking, hillwalking, mountain climbing, and of course cycling. As a result, a unique heritage has emerged over the past few years as the success of events devoted to all sorts of sports, including the Ironman, the Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes, and the final stage of the Tour de France à la Voile, have contributed to the renown of our fantastic region.

La Madone d'Utelle

Utelle: a historical village
Known for its pilgrimages to La Madone d'Utelle, its listed church and its history dating back to Roman times including a sanctuary built around 850, the village of Utelle (pop.700) overlooking the Vésubie gorge still retains many traces of its past (Saint-Véran church, White Penitents' Chapel, etc.). Over the years, it has become an essential part of local cycle routes. For passing cyclists, the village symbolises all that is most unusual and beautiful about our superb mountain region. Utelle is in the heart of the Vésubie Valley, less than 40 km from the Mediterranean coast, and has extraordinarily beautiful mountain landscapes including the Gordolasque, Madone and Boréon Dales and summits over 3,000 m such as the Cime du Gelas (3,143 m). For cyclists, the finish at La Madone d'Utelle signifies the end of a ride that may be hard but perfectly represents the outstanding local countryside.
