Gesink: «Do as well as the last time»

Fourth in 2008, the only time he rode Paris-Nice, Robert Gesink is hoping to do at least as well this season as the leader of the new Blanco team. The Dutch outfit is one of the strongest of the peloton on paper and will also count on Australian Mark Renshaw for the sprints in the early stages of this Race to the Sun.

How is your form?

I feel pretty good. I haven t had so many races yet this year. So far everything is going well, I had a good winter. Paris-Nice is my first goal of the season. We've got a strong team here. I want to go for the classification of course and I hope I can do as well as I did the last time I was here.

We remember your great climb on the Ventoux in 2008. What do you think of the Montagne de Lure stage?

Of course it's one of the most important stages for us. I haven't been there but it will be hard. Before that, it's always dangerous on Paris-Nice. That's why we brought a strong team to keep us in a good position. That's one of the days I'm focusing on first for sure.

The team has changed a lot. How did it affect you?

I think we all got to the start of the season with a completely new team. You can see the results. We already won ten races this year with the team. We're going well with the team. It's important to continue with the important races like Paris-Nice and Tirreno. I've been looking forward to this race and I'm ready to do good. Before the sponsor stopped, we already had a lot of changes in the management of the team. It already happened before. Those changes we see in our daily life. There are changes in training, for me it feels very good and for a lot of other riders too as the results show.

Outside of the GC, what are the other team goals?

Mark Renshaw is here to do a good sprint. We worked hard for him in Almeria and it worked out so he has lots of confidence. Of course we will look after him the first days. But the GC will be our main objective for sure.
