Peyragudes

Peyragudes

Known for its international snowboard competitions during the winter, the Pyrenean resort welcomes each summer the world elite of longboard, a variety of skateboards. The cinema experts will have also noted that in 1997, twenty years ago, the opening scene of the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never dies was filmed in Peyragudes. For the first ever finish of the Tour back in 2012, Alejandro Valverde had made the best of a victorious solo attack with 35kms to go. The following year, another Alexandre, Geniez, managed the same performance during a stage of the Vuelta.

Peyragudes and cycling

For the first stage finish in Peyragudes in 2012, Alejandro Valverde launched a decisive attack 35 km from the line to win on his own. His victory had been helped by the waiting game played by Chris Froome, still committed at the time to his then leader Bradley Wiggins.

The year after, Alexandre Geniez had done the same on a stage of the Vuelta. In 2010, organisers of La Route du Sud held a time trial up to the ski resort, which saw David Moncoutie win both the stage and the general classification. A stronghold of snowboarding and longboarding in the winter, Peyragudes is close to the Peyresourde pass, which the Tour rode 65 times since 1910.

The James Bond piste
Twenty years ago, Peryagudes was chosen by the producers of James Bond for the opening scene of the 18th film in the series, Tomorrow never dies, with Pierce Brosnan as agent 007. The Pyrenees resort was then turned into an Afghan camp. To celebrate the anniversary, Peyragudes decided to create a new panoramic slope of 2,670 metres and to name it 007.

Saoussas mill in Loudenvielle
Shortly after the French Revolution, to cater for the needs of the population of the valley of Louron, a mill was built close to the village of Loudenvielle. It worked until 1937, when its wheel was destroyed by a flood of the river Neste du Louron. To revive the activity, it was rebuilt on the original site. The mill is operational again, a magnificent building of wood and stone from the region.

Arixo in Loudenvielle
In Loudenvielle is set the Arixo museum, dedicated to the history of the region told with the latest technologies. The old farm made of stone, wood and slate, was fully renovated to host the equipment used for the visitors to discover the specificities of the valley.

Churches of the Louron valley
The Louron valley is home to several picturesque Romanesque churches whose monumental paintings from the 16th century were miraculously preserved. The valley was so isolated that the churches did not suffer from the destructions of the wars of religion or the French Revolution.
