Eymet

A newcomer on the map of the Tour de France, Eymet welcomes a cycling race of international level for the very first time. The little common of Dordogne however finds itself just by Marmandes, a city that the peloton will go through during the stage and that saw the birth of one of the finest actors of the race, Pierrick Fédrigo. Recently retired, the four-time stage winner on the Grande Boucle (including two wins in Pau) will this time be a simple spectator

Eymet and cycling

A new location on the Tour de France map, Eymet has never before held an international cycling race of that level. The small commune of Dordogne is however close to Marmande, which the peloton will ride through during the stage and which is the birthplace of a leading Tour protagonist of the pas decade, Pierrick Fedrigo. Recently retired, the four times stage winner on the Tour will this time follow a stage as spectator. Eymet had a first taste of the Tour when the race crossed town in 2014 during the stage between Maubourguet and Bergerac, won by Ramunas Navardauskas, who managed to hold the peloton at bay on the finish line. Chris Froome and the other Britons in the peloton will not feel too homesick in Eymet since 20 pc of the local population are British citizens and a fish and ship shop can be found in town as well as a cricket ground!

Sights

Bastide of  Eymet
Thebastide of Eymet was created on June 28, 1270 by Alphonse of Poitiers, Count of Toulouse and brother of King Louis IX. It was one of the few bastides from south-western France to own a fortified castle, of which a keep and a few walls remain. Like most bastides, Eymet was built around a very strict plan similar to the blocks in America, with roads crossing each other at right angles. In the middle of the set-up, the main square was surrounded by houses with arcades while a market hall stood in the centre (it was destroyed in 1793). The church was built outside the rest of the town.

Château d'Eymet
The château lost most of its ditches but an imposing rampart remains as well as a powerful square keep known as the Monseigneur Tower or Tour of the English, dating from the 13th century.
