Grand Départ : La Manche

Sites of the grand start

The Manche Department is home to 500,000 people in a region well- known for its shipbuilding, and know-how in the nuclear, energy and digital industries. It is the leading agricultural department in France with a diverse production (husbandry, vegetable farming and fishing) and it is largest dairy producer in the country.
In addition, its palette of colours and landscapes, and its 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites make it an outstanding tourist destination. Its Bays, islands, coves and beaches stretch out over 350km of unspoilt coastline. Inland, the wooded countryside and its hedgerows are crossed by a long network of county roads, which are favourable for cycling.

The official presentation of the 198 riders who will line up for the 22 teams participating in the 2016 Tour de France takes place on Thursday 30 June between 18.30 and 20.00 in Sainte-Mère-Église.

Following the general briefing, which will take place at 17.15 at the Airborne Museum (in the Ronald Reagan Franco-American Conference Centre building), the riders will board vintage military vehicles belonging to the Utah Beach Landing Museum. Preceded by tableaux vivants depicting historical episodes, primarily from the Second World War, the riders will be taken to the podium erected in Place de l’Église to be presented in turn to the public. The presentation ceremony will be followed by a bike parade that will pass through the streets of the town and, most significantly, in front of the Kilometre Zero marker of the Voie de le Liberté, which is located on the square outside the town hall in Sainte-Mère-Église.
