Thibaut Pinot claimed his second stage win at the Tour de France in the mythical Alpe d'Huez three years after his debut at Porrentruy. It was brilliant win built collectively by FDJ with Alexandre Geniez attacking from the gun. Pinot resisted to the return of Nairo Quintana who attacked Chris Froome just as he promised to do but the Kenyan-born rider kept an advantage of 1.12 over his arch-rival in the overall classification on the eve of the conclusive stage in Paris.
"I had a lot of dreams in that polka-dot jersey last night. I enjoyed it as much as I could. I have no regrets. If I had been told at the end of the first week that I would finish so high in the GC, with a stage win to top it, I would have signed on the dotted line. Thibaut Pïnot's victory is great for French cycling. We stimulate each other. Congratulations."

A sporting view
The city's history was conditioned by its geographic location, at the heart of trade exchanges between France and Italy, especially since the Fréjus tunnel was built. In 2011, it was after an Italian-French stage that Modane made its appearance in the club of Tour de France host cities. At the time, the course already took the riders to l'Alpe-d'Huez for quite a showdown. The Valfréjus resort also welcomed the Critérium du Dauphiné in 1987, for a stage that saw Charly Mottet take command of the GC.

In 1952, Fausto Coppi was the first to triumph at l'Alpe d'Huez, capturing the Yellow Jersey at the summit of the climb famous for its 21 bends.
The series of successes of Joop Zoetemelk, Hennie Kuiper or Peter Winnen then gave it the nickname of “Mountain of the Dutch” before the Italians then took command thanks to the likes of Gianni Bugno and Marco Pantani. But the French have also had their word to say. In 1984, Laurent Fignon scored precious points in his fight against Bernard Hinault who was to become the first Frenchman to win there in 1986. Twenty-five years later, Pierre Rolland gave France more glory, and in 2013, the first double climb of this monument of cycling, saw another French hero triumph: Christophe Riblon.
