Germany's André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) claimed his third stage victory of the 2015 Tour de France as he outsprinted his compatriot John Degenkolb in a bunch gallop in Valence. Stage 15 was again animated by Peter Sagan who increased his lead in the points classification and Thibaut Pinot who confirmed his return to form the day after finishing second in Mende. Chris Froome retained the yellow jersey for the tenth time this year.
It was a normal day but not a quiet one. The start has been very demanding. It hurt everyone. It would be fabulous to have a quiet day tomorrow. I know the finale. We'll have to pay attention to Froome and to all the other rivals who could attack me. I feel very well, much better than at the Giro I won last year, being sick.

A sporting view
On his visits to the Lozère area, Alberto Contador can be proud of certainly being the most efficient rider on the final climb of Mende. While he wasn't quite in the battle for victory in 2005 for his first ever Tour de France, “El Pistolero” had come close to success in 2010, only beaten in the final metres by “Purito”. But the Spaniard also triumphed there on two occasions when Paris-Nice stopped over in Mende, in 2007 and 2010, the two editions of the Race to the Sun that he conquered.

Due to its geographical location, the Gallo-Roman city established itself through time as a major communication centre. The doorway to the South of France was however only once visited by the Tour de France in 1996. On the other hand, the pack is used to stopping there quite regularly during the Critérium du Dauphiné. Sprinters such as Jean Graczyk in 1961 or Sean Kelly in 1989 have triumphed in Valence. The place could well inspire Mark Cavendish who clinched one of his 25 stage wins on the Tour in the neighboring city of Bourg-lès-Valence in 2010.
