Tourist attractions

Lannemezan

Situated at the bottom of the Pyrenees, the common is known for its emerging talents both in mountain sports and in rugby, the king of disciplines in the South-West of France. Indeed, Pierre Berbizier, former captain of the French national squad sharpened his tactical skills at the CA Lannemezan club. But the children of the city also reached summits at Olympic Games: Paul-Henri de Le Rue conquered bronze in snowboard at the Torino Games, and Marie-Laure Brunet also claimed a bronze medal, this time in Vancouver, in biathlon. Four stages of the Tour were also launched from Lannemezan.

Plateau de Beille

The resort that attracts cross-country skiers during winter dominates the valley of Ariège. But in the summer time, the place is taken over by keen cyclists, and more precisely by the peloton of the Tour de France that stopped over there on five occasions. The last time was in 2011 and Belgian Jelle Vanendert had enjoyed a sweet revenge over Samuel Sanchez beating the Spaniard to victory just two days after he had finished behind the same man in Luz-Ardiden. The Plateau de Beille also brings fond memories to Thomas Voeckler who had managed to defend his Yellow Jersey there both in 2004 and 2011.
