Matt White: "These guys are my passion..."

One of the tacticians behind the win by Orica-GreenEdge was the directeur sportif Matt White. He explains his emotions and the sequence of the riders in what ended up being a very close win, only one second ahead of Omega Pharma-Quickstep.

“We really were targeting Corsica and we wanted to do something special there. We went out there the weekend before the Tour with Daryl [Impey], ‘Gossie' and ‘Gerro' and we knew those stages suited the characteristics of our guys. But to win the team time trial... nah, I didn't expect that. I thought we'd be competitive today but to win? Amazing! To then take the yellow jersey... well, I just wasn't even thinking about that today but it is very good surprise.

“This day is not about me, it's about the team. I might not have been with the team for seven or eight months but these guys are my mates and obviously I kept in contact with these guys and it's really good for me to be back because this is what I love doing. It's my passion – these guys are my passion – but it's a break that had to happen.

“The order for the race today was: Cam Meyer, Svein Tuft, Brett Lancaster, Daryl Impey, Stuart O'Grady, Simon Gerrans, Simon Clarke, Michael Albasini and Matt Goss. Basically the plan was to keep all our big strong guys together to keep the speed long and constant and then the smaller, punchy guys rolled through with short turns and got out of their. Svein was on a ripper today! And so was Stuey but these races are not won by one or two guys, they're won by all of them and the consistency of the speed throughout the race."
