Voeckler: A calculator in your head

He started the day with a lead of just four points in the climbing classification but now all Thomas Voeckler has to do to win the polka-dot jersey is make it all the way to Paris...

“This morning, I told friends I was starting the stage with a calculator in my head. The jersey had not been won at the start of the day. And it was as strategic as physical to get to the finish with an unbeatable lead in the climbing classification. My opponent [Frederik Kessiakoff] never gave up, he clung on until the very end and fought hard all the way to the finish.
“In other races, the mountain prize... well, it can just ben another category on the schedule – but the polka-dot jersey of the Tour de France...? It is invaluable. It's a philosophy of this prize reflects the manner in which I like to race my bike: with courage, daring and the enthusiasm to attack. It might not mean that I'm the best climber in the Tour thought. Last year, the opportunity to get on the podium on the Champs-Elysees eluded me as I finished fourth overall. With the polka-dot jersey I will be able to do just that, provided that I make it all the way to Paris... And I think it will be a great moment.”
